Ho-Ho-Homeowners Holiday Insurance Tips

The holiday season is usually filled with joy, gatherings, and happiness, but it can also lead to stress for many people. If you are traveling to see family or friends, leaving your home empty poses a risk to burglary, while hosting a gathering can damage your home or leave you liable to accidents. Protect yourself and your home by following these holiday safety tips:

1. Burglary and Vandalism

Never post your travel plans, or even your day away shopping on social media sites. You would be shocked at what thiefs or other criminals can find out about you from these accounts. Turn off any locations or automatic geo-tagging services these platforms may use.

Avoid running power cords through doors or windows as they leave gaps for burglars to enter your home or business.

Make sure your homeowners insurance is up to date with your replacement cost, or a full renters policy will cover any victims of stealing.

2. Fire Hazards

If you decide to use a real tree during the holiday season, be sure to water it daily to avoid it drying out. If it becomes too dry, even regular holiday lights can spark a fire. If you plan on being out of town for more than a few days, an artificial tree will be the safest option.

Swap out real candles for electric ones. If you choose to light real candles make sure they are at least 6 feet from any flammable materials.

3. Accidents

If you are hosting a gathering and are serving alcohol, do not let them drive while under the influence. Even though almost all homeowners policies include some amount of general liability insurance, you can still be held responsible.

4. Outdoor Decorations

Many people decorate the outside of their home for the holidays. Make sure power cords are secure and away from walking paths to avoid tripping. If you are using string lights, inspect them before hanging them up to ensure there are no frayed cords or cracked bulbs. Always use caution when using a ladder to decorate. Make sure to keep all lights on an electric timer or turn them off before you go to sleep.
