Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Home to Prevent Insurance Claims

The clocks have been set forward, the weather is even warmer, that means it is time for spring cleaning. Everyone can benefit from a clean and refreshed living space, but on top of your regular cleaning, you should create a home inventory checklist and at least tackle these additional items:

  1. Change the air filter in your HVAC system and have an annual service. Regularly changing the filters can not only extend the life of your unit, but it will help maintain healthy air quality.

  2. Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. This should happen semi-annually to make sure they are working properly, and it is an easy way to keep everyone in the home safe as well as guarantee no additional damage occurs in case of a fire.

  3. Clean your gutters. Having a large buildup of debris can limit water flow through the gutter and downspout which can lead to water build up on the roof- an easy way to get a leak and file a claim.

  4. Clean your dryer lint hose. At a minimum you should pull the hose off the back of your dryer and use a vacuum cleaner to clear the lint that snuck past the lint trap. This is one of the leading causes of house fires and easily preventable.

  5. Find and fix any tripping hazards. Some of these include: dead branches, holes in the yard, broken bricks, cracked sidewalks and driveways, nails or boards that may have rotted on your decking. Preventing injuries = preventing claims.

  6. Check your water heater. Make sure there is no corrosion or cracks and repair as needed.

  7. Review your insurance policies and add on flood insurance if you already have not done so. April showers and then comes hurricane season. Make sure you are properly covered for a peace of mind.
