Halloween Safety and Your Homeowner’s Insurance
Everyone wants to have a fun, yet spooky Halloween; however, sometimes accidents happen. Some accidents are covered by your homeowners insurance policy, but with little preparation, and proper protection, you can prevent filing a claim.
Some ways to keep your home safe during Halloween:
Clear all sidewalks and walkways.
Between young kids with unstable footing, the nighttime sky, and many trick or treaters wearing masks, slip and falls are very common during Halloween. By clearing your walkway of any debris, and making sure it is properly lit, some of these mishaps can be avoided. Liability insurance on your property will usually cover these types of accidents if they do happen.
Steer clear of open flames.
Protect yourself, your guests, and your home, by eliminating open flames from any of
your holiday decorations. Even though your homeowners insurance will cover the cost of damages caused by fires, it is better to choose a safer alternative such as an electric candle or other electric Halloween decorations.
Secure your valuables.
If you are not going to be home, or participate in Halloween events, make sure to secure any valuable items. Easy ways to do this is by locking all doors to your home and automobiles, then if possible, parking your car in your garage, and keeping all important items out of sight.
Make sure your home is protected.
When you have an insurance policy on your home, you are protecting yourself from the unexpected. However, you can further protect yourself, your family, and your home by having a home security system with cameras and motion-sensitive lighting. This will keep your home secured no matter where you are.
